Job Title: Trust Accountant

Role Purpose

To manage the accounting and tax compliance for trusts and estates, ensuring accurate preparation of accounts, timely submission of tax returns, and effective handling of Inheritance Tax (IHT) matters in line with UK legislation and professional standards.

Key Responsibilities

Trust Accounts Preparation

Prepare annual trust and estate accounts in accordance with UK GAAP and relevant trust law.

Maintain accurate ledgers for income, capital, and distributions.

Reconcile bank accounts and investment portfolios.

Tax Compliance

Prepare and file Trust and Estate Tax Returns (SA900) and related schedules.

Calculate income tax and capital gains tax liabilities for trusts and beneficiaries.

Ensure compliance with HMRC deadlines and reporting requirements.

Inheritance Tax (IHT) Work

Prepare IHT100 and IHT400 forms for lifetime transfers and estate administration.

Advise on IHT implications of distributions and trust restructuring.

Monitor nil-rate band usage and reporting obligations.

Advisory & Administration

Liaise with trustees, beneficiaries, and investment managers.

Provide guidance on trust taxation, compliance, and planning opportunities.

Assist with Trust Registration Service (TRS) updates and AML compliance.

Skills & Qualifications

ATT/ACA/ACCA/CTA qualified (or equivalent experience).

Strong knowledge of UK trust law, taxation, and accounting standards.

Experience with HMRC online filing systems and trust software.

Proficient in using the Trust Registration Service.

Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines.

Desirable

Experience with complex estates and high-net-worth clients.

Familiarity with offshore trusts and related reporting requirements.
