We are working in partnership with a well-established group of UK-based SME manufacturing businesses and due to continued growth and a focus on operational efficiency, our client is seeking to appoint a Buyer to play a key role in optimising the procurement and supply chain function across the business.

This is a critical appointment within the organisation, responsible for managing supplier relationships, sourcing raw materials, sub-contract services, and finished goods in line with production and commercial needs. The successful candidate will help drive procurement best practice, ensure consistent supply, and support margin improvement through effective cost management and supply chain optimisation.

This role contributes directly to delivering customer value, improving profitability, and supporting working capital performance through efficient inventory and supplier management.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the full procurement lifecycle with a focus on quality, cost, and timely delivery.

  • Evaluate, select, and manage suppliers to ensure optimal performance.

  • Conduct competitive tenders and lead supplier negotiations, including rebates and cost-saving initiatives.

  • Continuously review alternative supply sources to improve cost, quality, and lead times.

  • Monitor and review supplier performance, driving continuous improvement.

  • Analyse and present recommendations on strategic sourcing decisions.

  • Optimise material sourcing through regular review of products and BOMs.

  • Proactively manage stock levels via the MRP system to ensure efficient inventory control.

  • Identify and communicate any issues with inbound supply and escalate when required.

  • Support commercial quoting activity by providing accurate pricing and lead time data.

  • Build strong internal relationships to align procurement activity with business needs.

  • Undertake supplier visits to build rapport and manage performance.

  • Assist with managing supplier returns and claims processes.

  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and collaboration.

Qualifications & Background:

  • CIPS qualified or degree educated.

  • Experience in a procurement role within a manufacturing or engineering environment.

  • Track record of process improvement and systems optimisation.

Skills required:

  • Strong working knowledge of ERP/MRP systems.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.

  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Able to balance detailed work with strategic oversight.

  • Proven ability to deliver cost savings and operational efficiencies.

  • Excellent communication and influencing skills at all levels.

  • Comfortable leading change, both procedurally and behaviourally.
